38 Language Installation
38.1 Overview
German and English are pre-installed for text recognition (OCR). Further languages can be downloaded and installed in the Add another language window. If a profile uses a language that is missing on the computer, the program downloads it by itself (Section 38.6).
Access: Button Install another language... in the OCR settings of a profile. You find the OCR settings in the task "Make file searchable" (Chapter 19), in the category "Temp. OCR Support" (Section 8.5) and in the task "Auto-rotate pages" (Chapter 33).
38.2 Available Languages
The program supports over 100 languages, including:
Western European Languages
- German and English (pre-installed)
- French
- Spanish
- Italian
- Portuguese
- Dutch
Eastern European Languages
- Polish
- Czech
- Hungarian
- Russian
- Ukrainian
Other Languages
- Chinese
- Japanese
- Korean
- Arabic
- Hebrew
The complete list is available in the Add another language window.
38.3 Installation
- In the OCR settings, click Install another language...
- Select the language under Available languages. Languages that are already installed no longer appear there.
- Click Download and install
The window closes after the installation. The language can then be selected in the language lists of the OCR settings. To install another language, open the window again.
Download
The language packages are downloaded from our website: - File size: usually 10 to 30 MB depending on the language, some script packages up to about 140 MB - Storage location: %APPDATA%\Automatic PDF Processor 2\OCRData\ (one subfolder and one file with the extension .ocrdata per language)
38.4 Removing a Language
The program has no function for removing a language. You can delete a language that is no longer needed manually while the program is closed: in the OCRData folder, delete the subfolder of the language and the file <Language>.ocrdata. The language then appears among the available languages again.
Note: German and English are part of the program and should not be deleted.
38.5 Usage in Profiles
After installation, the language is available in the OCR settings:
- Open the OCR settings, for example in the task "Make file searchable"
- Select the language under Language of document contents
- Optional: Enable Additional language (multilingual document) and select a second language
| Setting |
Usage |
| Language of document contents |
Main language of the document (required) |
| Additional language |
For documents with mixed text (optional) |
Example: A German document with English technical terms: - Language of document contents: German - Additional language: English
38.6 Automatic Installation of Missing Languages
If a profile uses a language that is not installed on the computer, the program downloads it by itself. This mainly happens in these cases:
- a new computer on which a backup was restored (the backup does not contain the OCR languages, see Section 36.9)
- imported profiles
- profiles from a centrally managed profile file
The main program checks the languages after startup and after every change to the profiles. During the download, a bar below the profile list shows the language and the progress; after the installation it disappears again. If processing runs without the main program (Windows service), the processor downloads a missing language as soon as it needs it for the first time.
If the download fails, for example without internet access, the bar stays orange. Clicking it shows the affected languages, the profiles and the reason and offers another attempt; the program also repeats the download by itself after a few minutes. Until the language is installed, text recognition of the affected profiles fails. The error message in the log names the missing language.
In the OCR settings of a profile, a missing language is listed with the addition "(not installed)". The setting of the profile is kept.
For computers without internet access, see "Installation Without Internet Access" in Section 38.7.
38.7 Tips and Notes
Language Quality
Recognition quality depends on the language: - Very good: Western European languages with Latin script - Good: Eastern European languages, Greek - Variable: Asian languages, depending on print quality
Changing Computers and Backups
The installed languages are stored in the OCRData folder of the application data folder. The backup of the application data does not contain this folder. On a new computer, the program downloads the languages used by your profiles by itself (Section 38.6).
Installation Without Internet Access
For computers without internet access, you can download a language package on another computer and set it up manually:
- Download the package:
https://www.gillmeister-software.com/products/automatic-pdf-processor/ocrdata/<Language>.ocrdata.zip. Replace <Language> with the name of the language as shown in the Add another language window (for example French.ocrdata.zip).
- Extract the ZIP file. It contains a file
<Language>.ocrdata.
- While the program is closed, copy this file to the folder
%APPDATA%\Automatic PDF Processor 2\OCRData\.
- The file
<Language>.ocrdata is itself a ZIP archive. Extract its contents into a subfolder named after the language, for example OCRData\French\.
